#flatschallenge - Day 5 -What's working for us?

When I first heard about the Flats and Handwashing Challenge from reading one of my favorite blogs by +Kim Rosas from Dirty Diaper Laundry, I knew I had to give it a try. Before this, I would not even attempt a flat. It was all pockets and inserts for me.

Let me just take a moment to tell you that my tune has changed! I love my snappis, I love my flats, and I love my wool covers!

Wool can be pricey, but as long as it doesn't get poopy you can use it multiple times without having to wash it! Trust me here. Just let it dry between changes. You are good to go! I will have to go into further detail in another post.

For now here is what is working for us.

Day Time

Day time changes are usually easy. Unless she pooped, but that is to be expected. I can easily use just one flat at a time without any boosters or fleece liners. I even go without a cover most of the time. I feel it's better to let her breath. We have not had issues with our heavy wetter.

We also pad fold a flat or receiving blanket once a day and put it into a cover.

I add the diapers to our bucket to be washed if they have no poop. If they do, I scrape it into the toilet and rinse it before adding to the same bucket.

It sort of goes like this..
Swish swish swish, empty, fill, swish swish, detergent, swish swish swish, emtpy, fill, swish swish, rinse.

Night Time

I found a routine that works well for nights, and she doesn't wake up soaked! Obviously she is wet, but no more then if we used a pocket and 3 inserts! Hooray!! We can go through out the night with no changes!

So how do we do it?

It's simple. We use a wool wrap. 1 wool wrap gets us through our nights.

I start off with a flat, that is to be folded into the "kite fold".

I take a second flat and fold it up into a square the size of a prefold. I add in either my bamboo fleece prefold or bamboo fleece insert before folding over the ends.

Add baby, and put it on. Finally snap the wool wrap in place and you are good to go!

What isn't working?

Baby girl is crawling now, so my snappi doesn't stay put all of the time. It's really annoying. I need to get some pins definitely. I'm also not fond of the washing part either.

Are you taking the challenge? What is working for you? Is there anything that isn't?

Today MCO's Birthday Bash is giving away a pair of pediped Originals in the winners choice of size and gender!

pediped was created in 2004 by a husband and wife after their first daughter was born. They wanted a to create a shoe that would be both stylish and comfortable, could be worn inside and out, and that were healthy for their daughters feet. After extensive research they began the company which has become one of the fastest growing footwear brands in the US and has quickly expanded to all over the world. pediped is commonly pronounced as ped-ie-ped, but is actually pronounced pe[e]-di-ped. Imagine yourself saying the word pedi (as in Pediatrician) - pediped is pronounced the same way!
